2007 chevrolet suburban review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, the ultimate towing suv. introductionthe chevy suburban has been thoroughly redesigned for 2007, which means it might be called 'all new,' although it seems odd to apply those words to something that's been around for 70 years. This is the 11th generation of the venerable suburban. And despite the fact that the current times might be less friendly to the trusty old truck than before, with vehicles of its size being demonized for causing the melting of icecaps and whatnot, the suburban is no dinosaur. And it is loved by those who need it. It's available in light-duty 1500 or heavy-duty 2500 chassis. The latest generation of its 5. 3-liter vortec engine (downsized to 325 cubic inches from 350 in the old days) has an aluminum block and makes 310 horsepower with 355 pound-feet of torque. The optional engine is a new 6. 0-liter mill, with an aluminum block and heads and variable valve timing, making 366 horsepower and 380 pound-feet. the popular 5. 3-liter (1500, 4wd) is epa-rated at 15 city and 20 highway miles per gallon, on regular unleaded, and it can also run on ethanol); the same truck with the 6. 0-liter engine is rated at 14/18. Full length airbag curtains are optional, but front side airbags are not available. another 6. 0-liter engine, with an iron block, comes with the 2500 models. The 2500 also adds hydroboost to the brakes, a heavier suspension with leaf springs, and 16-inch truck tires. The 2500 4wd is rated to tow 9400 pounds, while the 1500 can tow 8000. the styling changes to the new suburban are subtle but significant, and handsome. The windshield is raked for better aerodynamics, and the chrome has been swept off the ls and lt. Inside, the dashboard has been lowered and instrument panel finally made tidy. The seats have been raised, giving a commanding view of the road with that lowered dashboard; with optional adjustable pedals, a driver of any size can achieve a comfortable and confident driving position. the suburban can seat from six to nine passengers, depending on the seats that are chosen. There are 137. 4 cubic feet of storage behind the front seats, with the second row folded and third row removed. Behind the raised third row, there are still 45. 8 cubic feet. This (and towing) is what the vehicle is all about: passengers and cargo. However, unlike a growing number of suvs, the seats don't fold flat into the floor, unfortunate for outdoorsmen who view the cargo compartment as an occasional sleeping area. Setting a nine-foot fly rod in there without having to break it down is still a real luxury, however, and the back of the 'burb will accept other long items that are awkward to load into smaller rigs. the all-new frame is stronger, stiffer and fully boxed (49 percent stiffer and 35 percent more resistant to twisting). The rigid new frame enabled the suspension to be redesigned, and a rack-and-pinion steering system is used, for the first time. The front track has been widened by three inches, and the rear by one inch. This suburban rides and handles much sweeter than any before it: less undulation and more precision. considering the vehicle weighs nearly three tons (5745 pounds), the acceleration is strong, and the powerful sound of the engine under full throttle is satisfying. The new generation of this engine has an aluminum block and makes 310 horsepower with 355 pound-feet of torque. The optional 6. 0-liter engine 1095) is all aluminum with variable valve timing, making 366 horsepower and 380 pound-feet. another 6. 0-liter engine, with an iron block, comes with the 2500 models. They all have a tow/haul mode, which reduces shifting and makes the shifts quicker, so the transmission doesn't work so hard when pulling a big load. Other options include a locking rear differential, engine block heater, transmission oil cooler, power adjustable pedals, remote starter, and audio upgrades. safety equipment on all models includes dual frontal airbags, anti-lock disc brakes with electronic proportioning, and stabilitrak, gm's electronic stability program with anti-rollover mitigation and traction control. Full length airbag curtains with rollover detection are optional, but front side airbags are not available. It's a twin to the shorter tahoe. The mesh grille is split by a gold chevy bowtie, and the headlights are all business, nothing fancy, just good-looking function: big near-rectangles at the corners. They're halogen and do an excellent job of lighting up the road. The bumper fascia reveals a low license-plate holder sandwiched by openings for tow hooks, with small round fog lamps at the corners like single teardrops falling from the headlamp eyes. The seam between the fascia and fenders is very tight, and an indication that gm is improving its build quality. rake has been added to the windshield, improving the aerodynamics and looks. The hood has two long bulges at its sides, extending from almost the windshield to almost the grille; chevy calls these twin bulges the power dome. the rear liftgate is still vertical, and the rear window opens independently, with both the manual and power liftgate, which is aluminum, reducing the weight and thus the effort to raise and lower it. Split doors are not available. the suburban lt looks clean and stylish from the side, without chrome trim. Too bad the thick five-spoke wheels are boring, costing the 'burb an opportunity to look real sharp. Seventeen-inchers are standard but 18-inchers are optional, as are 20-inchers that are too big for grown-ups and degrade the ride. interiorthe chevy suburban can seat six to nine passengers. Many other suvs can carry seven passengers without taking up so much space on the road, but the passengers are cramped (and these suvs can't ever carry nine). A motor drives the seatbacks down a. 2005 chevrolet malibu review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Solid mid-size sedan; practical maxx. introductionthe chevrolet malibu was launched to compete with the mid-size imports from japan. We were surprised by the acceleration performance from the v6 and delighted by the crispness of handling on winding roads. It feels firmer than the camry, but softer than the accord, a good balance, in other words. Malibu's solid structure is based on gm's new epsilon platform used by a couple of highly successful european sedans. Along with its compliant suspension, this gives the malibu a smooth, comfortable ride, yet allows for spirited driving. This is no mush-mobile. It's quiet underway. No question, this is a highly competent sedan that's practical and easy to live with. where the malibu needs work is in the appearance department. Introduced as an all-new model for 2004, the malibu is better looking than the plain-looking previous model, but it's no raving beauty. That silver band across the front is designed to clearly identify this as a chevy, but it won't go down in history as a great design. the malibu has something the imports don't: the maxx. Maxx is a longer-wheelbase variant, whose extended roofline and rear cargo hatch suggest a sporty station wagon. While malibu seems destined to disappear into a crowd, maxx looks just as determined to stand out and be noticed. starting at just a hair under $19,000 and topping out below $25,000, malibu base prices are extremely competitive with the prices of the honda accord and toyota camry, which can approach $30,000 with options. The previous malibu ranked tops in the midsize car class in the j. Ls and lt versions come with a 3. 5-liter overhead-valve v6. Anti-lock brakes (abs) with traction control are optional 400). Side-impact airbags and head curtain airbags are optional for base and ls models 690) and we recommend them highly. Three levels of audio are available, from the base am/fm stereo and cd player to the top-of-the-line system with an in-dash, six-cd changer, six speakers, and automatic volume and tone controls 300). A unique option is the remote starter 150), useful both in cold climates to warm up the car before the driver climbs in and in extremely hot climates to cool it down. walkaroundthe chevrolet malibu looks more contemporary than its bland predecessor, with more character and class. It also looks more substantial, giving the impression it's a more expensive car than it is. And it is, indeed, more substantial, slightly wider than the model it replaces. the front features a chrome bar across the full-width of the car, with the familiar chevy bowtie in gold in the center. The bar along, along with malibu's squinty headlamps, attempts to invoke a family resemblance to chevy trucks, which have been highly successful in the marketplace, but the design execution didn't work as well on this mid-size car. the rear of the sedan resembles the upright rears of european cars. And indeed, the malibu shares its structure with the highly successful german opel vectra and the swedish saab 9-3. Malibu is built on gm's new epsilon global platform, a front-wheel-drive architecture developed by a team of american, german and swedish engineers. Epsilon is also being used for the new pontiac g6. The bottom line is that the epsilon platform provided good bones for a new malibu sedan. from the center post of its roof forward, malibu maxx is identical to the sedan. From there back, however, maxx is a different and more innovative vehicle. Maxx isn't larger than the sedan, but it is proportioned differently. At 106. 3 inches, the wheelbase of the malibu sedan stands at the small end of the mid-size spectrum. Maxx rides a wheelbase that's six inches longer, stretching 112. 3 inches. Yet in overall length the maxx is a half-inch shorter than the sedan (187. 8 inches vs. 188. 3). That gives the maxx very short overhangs, a good thing. Maxx is a half-inch taller than the sedan. Its roof is longer, its trunk shorter, increasing space for rear-seat passengers. interiorthe malibu looks as substantial inside as out. With 101 cubic feet of interior space, the malibu sedan is extremely roomy for five passengers. The seats are comfortable. The front passenger seat cleverly folds flat for carrying long objects such as skis. The rear seat splits and folds 60/40. the interior is conservatively styled. Controls on the center dash are conveniently backlit for night driving. The heating and air conditioning controls were a little confusing, however. Likewise, the stereo seemed designed more for style than function, though it worked well. We thought the wipers were a little loud. And the triangularly shaped outside mirrors are small, limiting rearward vision more than we liked. otherwise, it's a convenient interior. Its rear seat is split 60/40 not only in the back, but in the cushion; and each unit slides fore and aft as much as seven inches to adjust between passenger and cargo room. Rear-seat passengers sit farther back in the maxx and enjoy nearly identical room as the front-seat occupants, and as much as the rear-seat riders in a full-size domestic sedan. Maxx's rear seatbacks also recline for improved comfort. In short, the back seats of the maxx are a comfortable place for adults. standard in the maxx is a fixed skylight over the rear seating area, so rear-seat passengers can see clouds by day and stars by night. Or they can close their individual sunshades. back in the cargo bay, maxx provides 22. 8 cubic feet of space, vs. 15. 4 for the trunk of the sedan. Fold down maxx's back seats and the available space expands to 41 cubic feet. There's a 12-volt power outlet way in the back in addition to the two up front that it shares with the sedan.
